What types of foods are compatible with the feeder?
Almost any frozen fish food that is sized small enough to fit inside the tube can be used. Examples that we have had success with are mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, fish eggs, cut fish, cut squid, frozen copepods, blood worms. You need to thaw the food first so that it can be suspended in solution.
Does the feeding system come with food?
No food comes with the feeder. The feeder comes with everything but the food. The feeder is intended to be used with your favorite frozen food. We are not able to ship frozen food with the feeder at this time.
I don't see any food falling into my tank.
The feeder slowly dispenses food throughout the day. Because the feeder uses natural physical thawing properties of the thawing chamber and the feeding tubes, it is not possible to set the exact time when food will fall into the aquarium. The exact time the food falls into the tanks is not relevant, because over the course of about 8 hours all the food will have fallen into your aquarium.
How do I know the feeder will mount correctly onto my aquarium?
The aquarium mount has been designed to fit both small and large aquariums. The distance between the mounting supports is 1 inch. If your aquarium edge is wider than 1 inch (uncommon), then the mount will not work. You can get a piece of glass or acrylic cut to fit your aquarium along with a hole drilled in it large enough for the feeding tube to drop the food through, and set the thawing chamber on top of this.
My aquarium top does not allow installation of the fish feeder
Because aquarium tops comes in all sorts of sizes and styles, it is impossible to create a mount that works on all aquariums. The feeder works best on aquariums with flat glass or acrylic tops. It also works well with aquariums with screen tops, as long as there is space for food to fall into the aquarium. For ideal fitting, it works well to go to your local home improvement or hardware shop and have them cut a piece of glass that fits your aquarium. You will then need to drill a circle in the top for the food to fall through.
Is the feeder reef safe?
Yes, the feeder has been designed to be reef safe.
My thawing time is not 8 hours
We have thoroughly tested the feeder to work correctly. We went through scores of designs in order to get a high quality, functional and durable product. Because the feeder uses the physical properties of water / ice, the actual thaw time depends on the air temperature of the air immediately surrounding the feeder and the aquarium water temperature. Water makes contact with the aquarium mount which transfers heat to the thawing chamber. Air makes contact with the thawing chamber which transfers heat. If you have fans near the feeder, this would also affect thawing time. We have tested the feeder to be used with an air temperature of approximately 75 degrees and a water temperature of 78 degrees. While most reefs are around this temperature, room temperature can be highly variable. If you have powerful lighting above or near the feeder, this will transfer more heat and make thawing time less. If your room is very cool in the winter, you will have longer thawing times. Room temperatures down to 70 degrees won’t likely affect thawing time very much, but if the room is much cooler you will see longer thawing times. We have designed the product to work well with the most common water and air temperature ranges.
